From what I understand it gets quite a bit of hate. I am not so sure it is deserved. This is basically the Ferrari Boxster

I kinda like it, the convertible that is. But there's only one Ferrari I REALLY want, and that's the 400i.

From what I understand, the Mondial catches a lot of crap because it was made poorly.
Ferrari fans hate it because it has two tiny backseats.
Regardless, you buy one and you look like "that guy in a Ferrari" just the same as if you bought a 360 Modena or 458 Italia. If you live in rural or suburban America, everyone's gonna think you have money and punch your employees in the face... Shit, that was too soon.

3200lbs, 205hp (when new) and black plastic everywhere. Costs as much as any other Ferrari to maintain.

If I got a stupid enough deal on it, I'd definitely take it, but I'd rather have a similarly priced and infinitely cooler 308.

Well, if you want a Ferrari whose price hasn't exploded yet, this might do you. Sadly thought it isn't actually much good.

The V8 2+2 has never been popular with enthusiasts. It's usually the entry-level Ferrari (which is why your Boxster analogy makes sense) and is never really desirable later in their life. They sell well, though.
308GTB4 was the first one. Then came the Mondial. They are inexpensive, classic Ferraris with all the maintenance costs as their more exciting, faster, better looking siblings. I would rather spend the money and get a 328 instead of a Mondial.*
Time will tell if the current California will become unloved later in life.
*I can't afford either. However, If I only had $30-40K to spend on something, I would look for something else.

Never really liked it. It had poor performance for its time and even though the Quattrovalvole models later on made it better, it just wasn't anything to be reckoned with. Plus, I just don't find it particularly attractive either - it's too narrow and doesn't make enough of an impact to say it's a Ferrari.

I loathe the Mondial. It's got a weird cab-forward look that, to me, just makes the the least appealing thing on four wheels. The Boxster isn't an unattractive car, and is a great performer, so I'd have trouble comparing them
Assuming I had to keep the Mondial, I wouldn't trade my 12 year old Civic DD for one. I actually wrote a whole post to that effect a while ago, but with my old Corvair being the car I wouldn't trade for a Mondial.

You could trade the Corvair for Mondial, then sell the Mondial and buy five more Corvairs...

Always loved it growing up.

Obviously, but I said I was assuming I had to keep the Mondial. I'm not debating what the car is worth, I'm saying I'd rather own the Corvair because I really don't like the Mondial. Sure, I'd trade $2000 for $20000, but what's the fun in that conversation?

Because then you could flip the Mondial and get a Yenko Corvair.
